Senior Football

Our chances of progressing in the championship in 2011 disappeared last Sunday in Kilmac when we were defeated in our final group match. Despite opening the scoring with a Ronan Crotty point in the first minute, we were to play second fiddle throughout the field for the rest of the half as Kilrossanty dominated possession & with the wind to their backs they delivered early ball into their full forward line which led to several goal chances before they finished to the net in the 10th minute. By the time we added our second point from Donal Larkin in the 22nd minute, Kilrossanty had 1-3 on the board & we had lost wing back Martin Whelan to a bad facial injury. Gavin Nugent got our third point of the half in the 25th minute, but Kilrossanty had added 4 more before half time to leave us 1-7 to 0-3 behind at the break. We started the second half well & finally started to win some possession which allowed us to give good ball in to our forwards, who had seen very little of the ball in the first half. We had added 3 points by the 37th minute, 2 from Donal Larkin & a free from Ronan Crotty, but we also kick a few wides at this stage, which were to prove costly in the end. It was the 47th minute before we scored again, with a pointed free from Ronan Crotty, & when Michael Curry added another point within a minute, we were only 2 points behind. However we couldn’t press home our advantage & didn’t score again till Gavin Nugent pointed injury time, with Kilrossanty having added their first points of the half in the 58th & 59th minute. At the final whistle the score was Rathgormack 0-9, Kilrossanty 1-9.

Team: Brendan Crotty, Gerard Kirwan, Nigel Skehan, Kieran Fogarty, Mikey Crotty, Paul Shankey, Martin Whelan, Ronan Cahill, Richie Power, Michael Curry (0-1), Edmund Hogan, Gavin Nugent (0-2), Donal Larkin (0-3), Paudie Whelan, Ronan Crotty (0-3 (2 fr)).

Subs: Mervyn Cummins for Martin Whelan, Jack Nugent for Gerard Kirwan, Tony Power for Richie Power.

The absence of Paul Power & Paul Drohan through injury, Jamie Kirwan through suspension, & Martin Whelan who was injured in the first half, had a significant bearing on our performance & limited our team options. However we can make no excuses as Kilrossanty played the best football on the day & showed greater desire over the 60 minutes. Disappointment for our seniors again this year after some promising performances, but we failed to win a championship match. We now face a tough match against either St. Saviours or Ballinameela in the relegation playoff with the fixtures to be announced later in the week. We always have difficulty against the city side & Ballinameela beat us in last year’s championship before they went on to draw against Stradbally in the county semi-final. Let’s hope everyone involved with the team puts in a big effort in the coming week’s to retain our senior status.

U16 Football Championship

Our U16’s had their third win at home to St. Oliver’s last Sunday on a score line of 5-9 to 3-6. The lads are away to Kilmac next Saturday at 11:30 AM.
