“Deise Abu”

It was a great day for all GAA people throughout the county last Sunday when the minor hurlers lift the Irish Press Cup for the first time since 1948, with an 8 point win over Galway in the All Ireland Final. Special congratulations to William Hahessy from Kilballyquilty, Rathgormack & Sean Clancy from Clonea who are prominent members of Rathgormack GAA Club & who represented Clonea GAA club & the whole parish with distinction last Sunday & throughout the entire championship campaign. William had a good game at corner back & is one of only two players on the team who have started in the same position for all the 8 championship matches on the way to All Ireland glory. William had an injury scare in the last training session before the final last Thursday night when he went over on his ankle but thankfully he was able to take his rightful place on the team in the historic win. Sean, who started the first two championship matches in goal, was sub goalie on Sunday, & he can also be very proud of the contribution he has made to Waterford’s All Ireland success. Last Sunday, William becomes the first Rathgormack player to win an All-Ireland for Waterford at minor or adult level, with the only other All Ireland medals won by a Rathgormack man coming back in the early 1900’s, when Mick Curry won 3 All-Ireland senior football medals with Dublin in 1906,1907, & 1908. Sean is the first Clonea man to win an All-Ireland since 1948, when John Cusack was a member of the last Waterford team to win the minor All-Ireland. This underlines the historic achievement that both William & Sean have been involved in & no doubt it is only the start of these two young men’s successful careers in the years ahead. William & Sean, the people of Rathgormack & Clonea salute you both. Well done.
