Minor Football

Our minor’s season came to an end for this year when in the county semi final against An Gaeltacht last Wednesday night at Fraher Field, we came up against very strong opposition, which resulted in an 11 point defeat at the end of an hour’s football. An Gaeltacht had the edge on us in almost every position & were particular dominant in the centre field area were they had 2 big mobile & talented footballers that we could not get to grips with in the large Fraher Field pitch. An Gaeltacht opened the scoring in first minute and a Gavin Nugent free brought it level on 6 minutes after we had missed a few easy scoring chances beforehand. It was all An Gaeltacht after that and they added 7 more points before half time with a single Gavin Nugent point from play on 15 minutes our only response to leave the half time score Rathgormack 0-2, An Gaeltacht 0-8. We introduced James Green for Jonathon Flynn & C.J Hamilton for Aidan Flynn into the forwards for the start of the second half, & C.J. made an almost immediate impact when early in the second half he gathered a ball wide on the 45 metre line before using his lightning pace to solo away from 2 defenders before hitting a low shot against the base of the near post & with the keeper beaten the ball rolled across the goal & wide. A goal would have given us renewed hope but An Gaeltacht heeded the warning signs & by the 44th minute were 0-12 to 0-3 ahead. In fairness to our lads they continued to battle to the end & four points in the last 10 minutes was proof of that. An Gaeltacht added a fortuitous goal in the 58th minute when a dropping ball in to our excellent keeper, Padraig Hunt, was spilt & ended up rolling over the goal line. The match ended with the final score, Rathgormack 0-7, An Gaeltacht 1-15.

Team: Padraig Hunt, Johnny Nugent, Conor Hennebry, Quann Butler, Brendan Behan, Dean Kirwan, Jason Curry, Michael Curry, Connor Walsh, Tony Curry, Gavin Nugent, William Hahessy, Jonathon Flynn, Kevin Dunne, Aidan Flynn. Subs used: James Greene, C.J. Hamilton.

The club would like to thank all the players for their commitment over the last 6 months & also the management team of Tom Hassett, Brendan Curry, Joe Murray & Ger Power who have put in a lot of hard work into this bunch of players over the last 2 years, which will no doubt be of benefit to all involved in the years to come. Some short & long term injuries to key players probably deprived this team of reaching their full potential, hopefully all involved will stick at it and be successful at minor & U21 level in the coming years.

Senior Football

We completed our final preparations for the championship match against The Nire on the 15th May with a league fixture against Clashmore last Sunday. This match was played at 12 PM in Bushy Park to accommodate the Clashmore club who were involved in the County minor football final in Fraher field in the afternoon.

Playing against a strong wind in the first half we started well & were 0-5 to 0-2 up after 15 minutes. We continued to be on top for the remainder of the half & a goal in the 21st minute helped us to a 1-6 to 0-3 lead at half time. As often happens, we relaxed for the start of the second half thinking the gale to our back would see us win comfortably, but by the 36th minute Clashmore had added 1-1 & we now had a very slim lead. Clashmore managed to level it up at one stage in the second half but we finished strongly running out winners on a score line of 1-10 to 1-8.

We now look forward to next Sunday’s championship battle against The Nire. Throw in is at 2 PM in Fraher Field, & our match is followed by the game between the other 2 teams in our group, Stradbally & Kilrosanty.

We open our championship campaign at home to Tramore on next Tuesday 17th May at 7:30 PM.
