U21 Football

Our U21 team secured the eastern ‘A’ title when they defeated Tramore last Sunday in Kill. On a dry but bitterly cold day, we started sharply but unfortunately kicked 4 wides & missed two goal chances in the opening 10 minutes, which would have put us in a strong position. A physically bigger Tramore side settled after this & kicked the opening 2 scores of the match in the 11th & 12th minute, one from a free, to give them an unlikely lead. We continued to struggle to find our rhythm after this but we opened our scoring in the 19th minute with a Gavin Nugent free, & a minute later following good team play, the same player kicked for a point & as it fell short in front of goal, Jason Curry competed for the high ball with the keeper & the fullback & the ball went straight to the back of the net to give us a 1 point lead. There was no further scores in the half & we led 1-1 to 0-3 at half time, after 30 minutes when both defences were on top & with Tramore playing an extra man in front of our full forward line, our normally fluid forwards struggled to adjust our play to overcome this. The management obviously addressed this at half time, as from the start of the second half we were much more measured in our passing into the full forward line with corner forward Jason Gleeson seeing much more of the ball & opening our account for the half with a good point in the 31st minute. We added two more by the 40th minute from William Hahessy & Liam Walsh (Bally) to put us 4 up & with our fullback line coming to grips with their dangerous full forward, we were in control of the game. We added 3 further points in the 47th, 49th & 50th minutes to strengthen our position. But when Tramore scored 2 points in a minute, with 2 minutes to go & then saw a good goal effort scream low past the post, we were hanging on a bit as the final whistle sounded. Final score, Rathgormack 1-7, Tramore 0-5.

Team Eamonn Cahill, Padraig Hunt, Billy Power, Liam Walsh (Mothel), Brendan Behan, Dean Kirwan, David Connolly, Conor Walsh, Michael Curry, Conor Hennebry, Liam Walsh (Bally) (0-1), William Hahessy (0-1), Jason Gleeson (0-2), Gavin Nugent (1-3), Jason Curry. Subs: Robbie Flynn for David Connolly, Tony Curry for Conor Hennebry.

Congratulations to all the players & management involved & we now go on to meet either Ballinacourty or St. Olivers in the county final in a few weeks time.

Senior Football

The senior’s competitive season got underway last Sunday 3rd March when we played our first league match away to Gaultier. With a depleted squad due to the U21 match in the afternoon, we had the better of the first half & led 0-6 to 0-3 at the break. However after Gaultier scored a soft goal in the second half we faded away & eventually lost out on a score line of Rathgormack 1-7, Gaultier 2-10.

Team: Breandan Crotty, Mikey Crotty, Paudie Larkin, Johnny Quinlan, Ger Kirwan, Nigel Skehan, Cathal Crowch, Jamie Kirwan, Michael Sexton, Ronan Crotty, John Kirwan (Cool), Steven Kirwan, Donal Larkin, Sean Lacey, Paul Drohan. Subs: Jack Nugent for Ger Kirwan, Ciaran Fogarty for Nigel Skehan.
