Senior Football

Our replayed senior football relegation playoff match against St. Saviours went ahead under lights last Saturday night in Kilmac, & we secured our senior status for 2012 with a 3-point win in an eventful game. With 3 changes in personnel & a large number of positional switches following our poor performance in the drawn match, it was hoped that we would put in a much better showing, but we definitely played 2nd fiddle for the opening 20 minutes, & despite being level at 0-1 each after our opening score from Gavin Nugent in the 9th minute, St. Saviours were creating all the chance & kicked 5 bad wides in this period. Things were going from bad to worse for us when we lost corner back Mikey Crotty with what appears to be a bad knee injury after 15 minutes, & then St. Saviours were awarded a rather soft penalty for a late challenge as they bore down on goal. This was to prove a turning point in our performance, as Brendan Crotty made a great save low to his right, putting it out for a 45, which was missed. A minute later, centre forward Ronan Cahill, gather a ball about 20 metres out as it broke off a Saviours defender, & finished very well to the net for a good goal. 2 minutes later Edmund Hogan added a point from play, & straight away Ronan Cahill had his 2nd score with a good point that went over off the post, & suddenly we were 5 points clear. Saviours added 2 points before the break & a pointed free for us from Edmund Hogan, left us with a flattering 4 point lead at the break, 1-4 to 0-3. This seemed to give us confidence throughout the field for the 2nd half & we dominated the first 10 minutes & added 2 pointed frees from Edmund Hogan with a goal from Paul Drohan sandwiched in between, which he finished to the net off the ground after the keeper had made a good save from a shot from Edmund Hogan. This put us 9 points up, & seemingly safe, but we only added 1 more point before the end of the match, a free from Edmund Hogan, despite passing up on a number of chances, & as in a lot of our matches this year we faded in the last 15 minutes. To compound matters, our midfielder Richie Power was very harshly sent off for a 2nd booking with 10 minutes left to play, as Saviours scored the last 5 points of the match to make it closer than it should have been. St. Saviours where also reduced to 14 men for a second booking just as the match entered injury time, in a match that saw a lot of yellow cards issued despite in being a clean competitive match. Final score was Rathgormack 2-7, St. Saviours 0-10.

Team: Brendan Crotty, Mikey Crotty, Padraig Larkin, Billy Power, Nigel Skehan, Jamie Kirwan, Kieran Fogarty, Richie Power, Jack Nugent, Gavin Nugent, Ronan Cahill, Martin Whelan, Paul Drohan, Edmund Hogan, Ronan Crotty. Subs: Ger Kirwan for Mikey Crotty, Paudie Whelan for Ronan Crotty, Mervyn Cummins for Paul Drohan, Paul Power for Jack Nugent.

So another disappointing year for our seniors concludes & despite some encouraging performances throughout the year, we still failed to win a championship match. However on the positive side, a number of young players showed good promise breaking into the team & with another few talented young players looking to make the breakthrough next year, let’s hope we can build on this year’s U21 ‘A’ championship success in 2012. All in the club would like to thank the management team of Ger Power, Donie Crotty & Vinny Murray as well as all the panel of players for their commitment & effort throughout the season. Also to anyone who assisted throughout the year, especially our first aid team of Mick Norris, Caitriona Quinlan & Ger Kirwan, the club are grateful for your effort.

Race Night

Our largest fundraiser for the year outside of the Deise Draw, the annual race night, takes place on Saturday 26th November in Ned Kennedy’s pub. Race night cards have been distributed in the last week, so we would ask for all club members & members of the local public to support this fundraiser as much as they can as it is crucial to our financial well being at the end of a long & busy year. Also pencil the night in for a night out locally, as it always is an entertaining & enjoyable night for everyone who attends.

We are holding an end of season disco next Saturday 5th November between 7-9 PM in the community centre for our U6, 8 &10 boys who trained so diligently throughout the year to thank them for their effort & dedication. A medal presentation to all the players will be held on the night & also everyone will get some treats & refreshments.

Deise Draw

Congratulations to Tommy Curry, Ballindysert, who won €2000 in last weeks Deise draw. Also to Franny Halpin, Ballythomas who picked up €250. The last draw for this year takes place on the last Friday in November, so promoters should make sure that they get the balance of any outstanding money in to club coordinator, Ton Hassett, in the coming weeks.

Playing Gear

We will be ordering playing gear with O’Neill’s in the coming weeks so anyone who is interested in placing an order, both juveniles & adults, should contact either Vinny Murray or Josephine Curry to place an order. Details & prices for what is available can be viewed on the club website.
