Senior Football

We played our second championship match last Saturday night against Gaultier in Walsh Park, & after a tense & difficult hours football, we secured our second victory of the campaign, with a hard fought win. We had the benefit of a strong cold breeze blowing into the Keane’s Rd. goal in the first half & opened the scoring with a pointed free from Edmund Hogan after 2 minutes. Donal Larkin added our 2nd point after 7 minutes, before Gaultier knocked over a simple free after it was moved in for dissent. The game was quite disjointed at this stage as we found it difficult to breakdown Gaultier who were playing an extra man back in front of our full forwards, & we had a lot of unforced errors with our handling & passing. Edmund Hogan added two more points, one from play & one from a free by the 26th minute, with Gaultier adding their second pointed free just before the break, which was moved into a scoring position, again for dissent. Michael Curry intercepted a pass out of defence to score the last point of the half in injury time, to leave us leading 0-5 to 0-2, with the play from both teams being pretty mediocre. We failed to up the standard at the start of the second half, as Gaultier struck for two quick points in the first two minutes of the half, to leave us just a point ahead. We steadied things a bit with a point from Ronan Cahill & another free from Edmund Hogan, before Gaultier added their third point of the half in the 38th minute. The following five minutes were the winning of the game as Gavin Nugent slotted a point in the 42nd minute, before Edmund Hogan ran onto a through ball & touched it past the keeper a minute later. Donal Larkin added his 2nd point a minute later to give us a seven-point cushion, 1-9 to 0-5, & we seemed to have done enough to secure victory. However, in direct contrast to the Ballinacourty match, rather than driving on & finishing the game off, we failed to score for the rest of the game, as Gaultier added 4 points between then & the 55th minute, to give us a tense finish. However the goal they needed never looked like coming, & we held out for a deserved, if unimpressive victory on a score-line of 1-9 to 0-9. Well done to everyone involved & we can be very please with two wins from two games, but also aware that we have a lot of room for improvement. We have a five-week gap to our next competitive match against St. Saviours in the championship.

Team: Brendan Crotty, Billy Power, Tony Power, Mark Meares, Cathal Crowch, Paudie Larkin, Nigel Skehan, Jack Nugent, Ronan Cahill (0-1), Paul Drohan, Donal Larkin (0-2), Michael Curry (0-1), Gavin Nugent (0-1), Edmund Hogan (1-4), Ronan Crotty. Subs: John Kirwan (Cool) for Jack Nugent, Ciaran Fogarty for Donal Larkin, Mickey Crotty for Paul Drohan.

Minor Football

We had an agonising one point defeat in the championship last Monday 23rd April away to De La Salle on a score-line of Rathgormack 0-12 De La Salle 3-4. With Waterford minor hurlers in action this week, our 2 re-arranged fixtures against Ballinacourty & St. Patrick’s, have not yet been fixed. We need at least one win from these two games to make it to the semi-finals.

U16 Football

Our U16’s played Stradbally in their 3rd championship match last Saturday morning & after a very competitive game, & a last minute goal by Brian Connolly, they came out on top, 2-10 to 1-11.This was a real battling performance against a good Stradbally team, & it took a great save from Derek Hogan in goal in injury time to secure the two points. Half time score was Rathgormack 1-3, Stradbally 0-6, with our goal coming from Gavin Sheehan. Their next match is on 14th May at home to The Nire.
