Senior Football

Our senior team suffered their second championship defeat of the season against Ballinameela last Friday night at Fraher Field. With three personnel changes & a number of positional changes particularly in defence from the previous weeks match against Ballinacourty, it was hoped that these would improve our performance from the previous week. However, we didn’t get out of the blocks at all, & found ourselves 3 points down after 6 minutes, with two of those points coming from needless frees which was to prove an issue for us throughout the match. We eventually settled into the game & started to get good direct ball into our full forward line & points from Ronan Crotty, Jason Gleeson & Steven Kirwan followed by the 14th minute. In this period Brendan Crotty made a point-blank save following some lax defending, & we had a good goal scoring opportunity ourselves at the other end when Gavin Nugent set up his brother Jack with a good pass but from a tight angle the keeper got a touch to put it out for a 45 which came to nought. A Gavin Nugent point brought us level on 26 minutes, but another free a minute later gave Ballinameela the lead at the break, 0-6 to 0-5, & facing into a strong breeze in the second half we had it all to do. We started the second half well but had a number of wides from scoreable positions before Ballinameela added another point in the 34th minute. Our second half performance was very disappointing with only two points scored throughout the half, from Gavin Nugent & Ronan Cahill. And yet with 10 minutes to play we were only a point behind with Ballinameela having kicked a number of bad wides, 10 in total in the second half to our 5. But a few basic mistakes firstly left them in for an easy free in the 51st minute & then 3 minutes later a number of our players jumped together for a kick out which broke to an unmarked forward who soloed 50 metres before finishing low to the corner of the net to settle the tie. There were no further scores after this & we lost out on a score-line of Rathgormack 0-7 Ballinameela 1-9. Six of Ballinameela’s nine points came from frees throughout the hour, which contributed significantly to our defeat. Unfortunately we failed to click up front again & also showed little appetite for the battle when the game was in the melting pot in the second half. We have a big break now before we play An Rinn in our next championship match on the weekend of the 16th June, which we must win to have any chance of making the knockout stages of the championship. Hopefully we can improve in the meantime & give ourselves a fighting chance of making a quarter final.

Team: Brendan Crotty, Conor Walsh, Jamie Kirwan, Johnny Quinlan, Billy Power, Paul Power, Cathal Crowch, Michael Curry, Ronan Cahill (0-1), Paul Drohan, Jack Nugent, Steven Kirwan (0-1), Ronan Crotty (0-1), Gavin Nugent (0-2), Jason Gleeson (0-2).

Subs: Michael Crotty for Johnny Quinlan, Seanie Lacey for Jack Nugent, Nigel Skehan for Steven Kirwan

Intermediate Football

Last weeks championship match against Dunhill that was due to be played last Sunday was postponed during the week & has been re- fixed for August. Their next championship match is on the weekend of the 16th June against Tramore

Minor Football

Our minors are back in championship action this week when they play away to Roanmore on Thursday 2nd May at 7:30 PM. The minor football championship has been held up due to both the county minor hurling & football teams matches & the fact that a number of Dungarvan schools teams reached All-Ireland finals so it is not clear when our boys will be playing again after this match, as they still have a few championship matches to play before the knockout stages are reached.
