U21 ‘A’ Football County Final

The U21 Football county final which we were informed was going ahead next Saturday against Dungarvan, & which we published in the club notes in the local press as going ahead, is now in doubt due to a clash between the fixture & minor & intermediate football fixtures. Hopefully the officials in charge can get their house in order & inform both clubs that it is going ahead. The final is a repeat of last year’s decider, which Dungarvan won. Hopefully this time we can bring home the silverware & all associated with the club would like to wish joint captains Nigel & Richie & all the team & management the best of luck. Please check the club website or Waterford GAA website for details whether the match is going ahead or not.

Senior Football

With our U 21’s being rested before the expected county final this week, we fielded an under strength team away Stradbally last Sunday morning in our first league match. From the off we were on the front foot & after 10 minute led by 0-4 to 0-1. Picking up all the breaks around midfield, & with good work rate throughout the field, we continued to be on top for the remainder of the first half & despite having a goal from Brian Fogarty ruled out for a square ball, & passing up on a few further scores, we led at half time by 0-7 to 0-4. Playing against the breeze & the hill in the second half we found it more difficult to break down the Stradbally defence, & by the 45th minute Stradbally had taken a 1 point lead. We lost two players to injury in the final 15 minutes & as we tired Stradbally took advantage adding 1-3 in the final 5 minutes to run out winners on a score line that flattered them, Rathgormack 0-7, Stradbally 1-11.

Team: Brendan Crotty, Jack Nugent, Anthony Power, Mikey Crotty, Tony Power, Martin Whelan, John Crotty(B)(0-1), Paul Power(0-1), Mervyn Cummins, Paul Shankey, Paudie Whelan(0-4), John Kirwan(C)(0-1), Stephen Power, Brian Fogarty, Jason Murray.

Subs: Kieran Fogarty for Stephen Power, Kevin Power for Paul Shankey, Steven Flynn for John Kirwan(C).

We play away to Ballinacourty in our second league match on Tuesday 5th April at 7 PM.

Minor Football

Our minors secured a good win against an under strength De La Salle team last weekend. The defence was on top throughout in which Dean Kirwan was especially impressive. The midfield partnership of Michael Curry and Conor Walsh dominated most of the game which supplied plenty of good ball for our forwards in which William Hahessy, Kevin Dunne and Gavin Nugent were scorers in chief.

Final score: Rathgormack 7-20, De La Salle 2-5.

Team: Padraig Hunt, Johnny Nugent, Billy Power, Quann Butler, Brendan Behan, Dean Kirwan, Jason Curry, Michael Curry, Connor Walsh, Jonathon Flynn, Gavin Nugent, William Hahessy, Tony Curry, Kevin Dunne, Aidan Flynn. Subs: E. Norris for Gavin Nugent, James Greene for William Hahessy, Kevin Mulkearne for Jason Curry.

Juvenile Football

With the longer evenings now with us, training for our juvenile footballer’s from U6 to U10 moves outdoors this week, on Tuesday evenings from 6:15 to 7:15 PM. Training will continue every Tuesday throughout the summer until September. We would urge all those who have not attended the indoor sessions to come along on Tuesday nights. Newcomers particularly welcome.

James Greene

Belated congratulations to our minor football player James Greene on his recent achievement on winning 2 All-Ireland indoor athletics titles in Northern Ireland recently. It is great to see someone in the club secure a national sports title and James was back with our minor squad in last week’s victory against De La Salle.
