Our competitive season came to an end last weekend with both our Senior & Junior teams losing their respective knockout championship matches.

Senior Football

Our seniors took on Clashmore in the senior football quarter-final last Friday night, 21st September, under lights in Fraher Field, Dungarvan. In a match where we never got going & failed to perform throughout the field, ironically we opened the scoring with a Nigel Skehan point in the first minute after Edmund Hogan unselfishly set him up. Between then & the 9th minute Clashmore were completely dominant in midfield & the half forward line, & added 1-4 without reply, with the goal coming from a bad defensive mistake when we gave away the ball coming out of defence, something we repeatedly did throughout the match. We were being run ragged at this stage, but were thrown a lifeline in the 11th minute when the Clashmore keeper made a bad mistake when he mishandled the ball & was dispossessed by Michael Curry who finished to an empty net. A minute later Edmund Hogan was dragged down in the square to win a penalty & up stepped John Kirwan (Cool) to finish to the net, to remarkably bring us back level after such a bad start. We failed to build on these lucky breaks & Clashmore re-took the initiative with 2 points in the 14th & 15th minute, to retake the lead. Clashmore added 2 further points before the break to give them a 4-point lead. In an attempt the kick start our performance, the selectors, introduced Michael Sexton for Mark Meares & Donal Larkin for John Kirwan (Cool) & also made a few positional changes at the break, at it appeared to have the desired effect, as in the 34th & 36th minute we added 2 points from Donal Larkin & Edmund Hogan to bring it back to a 2 point match. A few half chances & wides followed for us in the next 10 minutes as we continued to struggle with our game & when Clashmore won & converted a penalty in the 49th minute, when we again gave away soft possession coming out of defence, it gave us a mountain to climb. The game petered out for us in the final 10 minutes, as Clashmore added 2 further points, as we failed to score for the last 25 minutes of the match. To top it all off, we had Tony Power & Billy Power sent off for second bookable offences in the final few minutes. In a forgettable night for everyone involved we lost out on a final scoreline of Rathgormack 2-3, Clashmore 2-11.

Team Brendan Crotty, Conor Walsh, Tony Power, Mark Meares, Ger Kirwan, Michael Crotty, Padraig Larkin, Ronan Cahill, Cathal Crowch, John Kirwan (Cool), John Kirwan (Bally), Nigel Skehan, Michael Curry, Edmund Hogan, Ronan Crotty. Subs: Donal Larkin for John Kirwan (Cool), Michael Sexton for Mark Meares, Paul Drohan for John Kirwan (Bally), Billy Power for Padriag Larkin, Paudie Whelan for Nigel Skehan.

So, a disappointing end to the season for our senior team after such a positive start when we beat county champions Ballinacourty in our first match back in April. Unfortunately we have had to manage without a number of first team players for various reasons throughout the year, & with 7 or 8 of last years team not involved last weekend, our strength & depth within the club has been tested fully this year. On a positive note, some of our very good underage players have gained valuable experience this year, & with a few more to come into the team next year, lets hope it won’t be too long before we break back into the last four within the county. All in the club would like to thank manager Ger Power & his selectors Kevin O Hara, Stephen Flynn & Vinny Murray for the work they have put in since the start of the year & also to the various different coaches that assisted us throughout the year. All in the club wish this young Clashmore team the best of luck in the remainder of the championship.

Junior Football

Our juniors took on Gaultier in the Eastern Final last Saturday in a match that was switched to Fenor from Dunhill, & unfortunately we surrendered our county title won in 2011, after a close & tightly fought game. We started the game on the back foot & Gaultier had 3 easy frees on the board within the first 10 minutes. After the poor start we played some good football & opened up there defence regularly & it was tit for tat for the remainder of the half, with Gaultier leading at the break, 0-8 to 0-6 having played with a stiff breeze. It was point for point again at the start of the second half & we managed to bring back level about half way through the second half. However shortly after this Gaultier struck for the decisive scores, when they added 2 points before scoring the only goal of the game to give them a 5-point lead. Both teams added scores before the end but we could not get back any closer than 3 points, as Gaultier tackled hard & showed the greater hunger in this period as they held out to win on a scoreline of Rathgormack 0-13, Gaultier 1-13.

Team Eamon Cahill, Muiris Quinlan, Johnny Kavanagh, John Crotty, Johnny Quinlan, Mervyn Cummins, Liam Walsh, Tony Bolger, Daniel Drohan, Jason Curry, Paddy Crotty, Jason Gleeson, Kenny Hassett, Seanie Lacey, Steven Kirwan. Subs: Michael Halpin for Paddy Crotty, Jason Murray for Jason Gleeson, Dean Kirwan for Muiris Quinlan.

These 2 teams have had some great battles over the last 5 or 6 years & last weekends final was no different, with Gaultier’s greater desire following defeats to us in the last 2 years finals, probably being the decisive factor. All in Rathgormack wish them the best of luck in the county final in the coming weeks. The club would like to thank team manager Denis Curry, & his selectors Stephen Flynn & Mervyn Cummins for their efforts during the year.
