Senior Football

We pulled off a shock victory against county champions, Ballinacourty in Fraher Field last Saturday night, in the first match of our 5-match championship campaign. Playing with the aid of a stiff breeze in the first half, we dominated the first 10 minutes & opened the scoring with a goal from Edmund Hogan in the first minute, after Gavin Nugent set him up. It was obvious that the opposition had brought a certain amount of complacency into the match, as we owned the ball at this stage & we added 3 points before Ballinacourty opened their account in the 12th minute with a well-struck 45. The rest of the half saw us fail to finish a few good moves as we kicked a few poor wides. We added just 1 point from an Edmund Hogan free, & Ballinacourty added 2 before half time, which saw us lead 1-4 to 0-3 at the break. Ballinacourty got the first point of the second half after 2 minutes & then Edmund Hogan with another pointed free in the 38th minute brought the gap back to 4 points. For the next 10 minutes, the match firmly swung in the champions favour, as after scoring a point in the 39th minute, they finished to the net a minute later, & they added 2 more points by the 49th minute to give them a 2 point lead, & many people felt that we had missed our chance of causing an upset. But great credit to the 19 Rathgormack players who contributed to this victory, as they tore up the script in the last 10 minutes & scored 5 unanswered points, 2 frees & 3 from play, scored by 4 different players, to give us a deserved 3 point victory on a score-line of 1-10 to 1-7. We play Gaultier in our 2nd championship match next Saturday night, 28th April; with a 6 P.M. throw in at Walsh Park. We will probably have to play slightly better again to overcome Gaultier, & you can be sure that any complacency will be ruthless exposed by them, as they are well used to beating us at all levels.

Team: Brendan Crotty, Billy Power, Tony Power, Mark Meares, Cathal Crowch, Paudie Larkin, Nigel Skehan, Jack Nugent (0-1), Paul Power, Paul Drohan, Ronan Cahill, Michael Curry (0-1), Gavin Nugent (0-2), Edmund Hogan (1-4), Ronan Crotty (0-2). Subs: Donal Larkin for Paul Power, Ciaran Fogarty for Cathal Crowch, John Kirwan (Cool) for Paul Drohan, Ger Kirwan for Nigel Skehan.

Junior Football

Our first championship match last Friday at home to Gaultier failed to materialise as with both teams out on the pitch ready for action, the referee failed to turn up, & therefore we had no game.

Minor Football

We are away to De La Salle on Monday 23rd April with a 7:00 P.M. throw-in, in our 3rd championship match. We have 2 re-arranged fixtures to play against Ballinacourty & St. Patrick’s, which may be play in the coming week, but at the time of submitting the notes; we have no fixtures to hand.

U16 Football

The U 16 team made it 2 wins from 2 in the county division 2 championship, when they defeated An Gaelthacht last Saturday at home on a score-line of 3-16 to 2-5. They will have a much tougher challenge when they play away to a strong Stradbally outfit, next Saturday 28th April, with an 11:30 AM start.

Colin Cooper

Rathgormack NS had the pleasure of hosting one of stars of modern Gaelic football on Tuesday morning, when Kerry’s Colin Cooper visited the school to meet & talk to all the boys & girls before having a coaching session with the older classes. There was great excitement amongst all the children as Colin’s immense talent & performances over the last 10 years with Kerry, has made him a household name throughout the country. Local Carrick-on-Suir AIB branch manager & former Stradbally footballer, George Walsh, facilitated the visit of Colin, who is an employee of AIB Bank in Kerry. The club would like to thank Colin & the staff of Rathgormack NS, & all those who were involved in organising the visit, which is a brilliant introduction to our school coaching sessions which will take place weekly in both Rathgormack & Clonea National Schools between now & the Summer holidays in June.
