Senior Football

Our senior’s play Brickey Rangers in the championship next Friday night 26th July at 7:30 PM in Fraher Field. A win here is a must if we are to have a chance of avoiding a relegation play-off, & with the Brickey’s recording a win in their last outing against Ballinameela, who defeated us, we have it all to do to secure the spoils. Please come along to cheer on the lads in this important match for the club.

Intermediate Football

Our intermediate team played their fourth championship match of the Eastern campaign against De La Salle last evening Saturday at Walsh Park. This match followed the pattern of our previous matches, & once again we started without a number of players who should have been taking to the field. The opening half was quite open & even, & despite falling behind to an early goal, we more than held our own with our midfield & half forwards on top. Despite losing midfielder Brian Fogarty to an eye injury early in the game, we continued to do well in this area, & with Donal Larkin, Daniel Drohan & Mikey Halpin kicking fine points as the first half drew to a close, we went in at the break a point up, & deservedly so. Half time score, Rathgormack 0-7, De La Salle 1-3. De La Salle provided more difficult opposition in the second half. They equalised & went a point up with two points in the first five minutes of the half & after about ten minutes, a long ball into the square found its way straight to the net, to leave us with an up hill battle. They had taken over at midfield at this stage & their greater physical height & strength particularly around midfield & in their defence meant they took complete control for the remainder of the game, as we found it very hard to hold onto position when we entered their half. A Kenny Hassett point was to be our only return for the second half hour as De La Salle ran out comfortable winners on a score-line of Rathgormack 0-8, De La Salle 2-16.

Team: Shane Gough, Liam Walsh (Mothel),Vinny Murray, Muiris Quinlan, John Crotty , Dean Kirwan, Mikey Halpin, Brian Fogarty, Steven Power, Donal Larkin, Daniel Drohan, Tony Curry, Daniel Crotty, Mervyn Cummins, Kenny Hassett. Subs: Jonathon Flynn for Brian Fogarty.

Our last game of the championship is against Dunhill in two weeks time where a win would secure our intermediate status for next year, while defeat would see us enter a relegation play-off.

Johnny Roche U16 Tournament

For the second year running, Rathgormack GAA club will host the Johnny Roche U16 Football tournament with Rathgormack, The Nire, Kilmac & St. Mary’s taking part. The tournament kicks off next weekend, when on Saturday 27th at 11 AM, The Nire take on St. Mary’s, while later that evening Rathgormack will play Kilmac at 7PM. Each team will play each other over a three week period with the top two teams playing for the Johnny Roche Cup, while the other two teams will play a shield final. This is great preparation for the U16 championship that starts in early September.
