Eastern Title for U21 Footballers

Our U21 footballers booked a place in the ‘A’ county final last Friday night in Carrickbeg when they easily dispatched Mount Sion in the Eastern final replay. If the first match was a tight affair where we were fortunate to come away with a draw, this match was the exact opposite, & we were on top in practically every position from the first minute to the last. Unfortunately, we left our scoring boots at home & we racked up a huge number of wides throughout the match & it wasn’t until the second half that we began to pull away on the scoreboard. The first half was a low scoring affair with Mount Sion opening the scoring in the 4th minute, & despite being dominant, it was the 13th minute before we equalised with a Ronan Cahill point, & went ahead with a Paul Drohan point in the 16th minute. Against the run of play, Mount Sion were back in front by the 21st minute when they scored 2 points within a minute, & 4 minutes later we were awarded a soft penalty when Sean Lacey was deemed to be impeded when shooting for goal. Up stepped Gavin Nugent to finish to the net, with the Mount Sion keeper getting a strong hand to it & being unfortunate not to keep it out, & we led at half time 1-2 to 0-3. We secured victory in the first 10 minutes of the second half, when we scored 7 points without reply, & after that, the championship intensity went out of the match along with the Mount Sion challenge. Despite kicking a good number of wides in the second half, we score 11 second half points, with the pick of these being a great score from Sean Lacey off his left leg after the ball was worked swiftly up the field from the corner back position. A much improved performance from the whole team on the last day out, but still much to work on before having a tilt at championship favourites, Dungarvan, in a repeat of last years County Final.

Final score: Rathgormack 1-13, Mount Sion 0-6.

Well done to all the team & management on getting back into the county final, which has yet to be fixed at the time of submitting the notes.
