U21 Football

Our U21 team kicked off the championship season with an Eastern quarter-final against Mount Sion last Sunday 19th February in Rathgormack. On a perfect day for football with only a slight breeze blowing down the field, our lads took control of this game from the throw in, & had 2 points on the board in the first minute from Seanie Lacey & Stevie Kirwan. We were 5 points up after 9 minutes & dominating possession throughout & when Seanie Lacey finished a good move to the net on 15 minutes, we lead 1-5 to 0-0. We tacked on a few more points before Mount Sion opened their account with a point on 23 minutes, but a minute later Seanie Lacey had his 2nd goal, & Gavin Nugent added 2 pointed frees before the break to leave us almost out of sight at 2-10 to 0-1. The second half was completely different, as two soft early frees in the first few minutes gave Mount Sion a bit of confidence & they improved throughout the field, winning lots of possession as complacency appeared to have set in with our lads, with a lot of basic mistakes creeping into our game. By the 46th minute, Mount Sion had added 6 unanswered points to bring them back into contention but the goal that they needed to put us under real pressure didn’t come early enough, & we added 2 pointed frees from Gavin Nugent in the 50 & 51st minute to steady things up, & stretch our lead back out to 11 points. Mount Sion did get a very good goal in the 54th minute but it was to prove too late, & we scored the last two points from Liam Walsh (Ballinafina) & Seanie Lacey, to leave the final score, Rathgormack 2-14, Mount Sion 1-8.

Team: Eamonn Cahill, Billy Power, Ger Kirwan, Conor Walsh, Johnny Quinlan, Cathal Crowch, Liam Walsh (Mothel), Sean Cullen, Ronan Cahill, Richie Lacey, Liam Walsh (Ballinafina)(0-1), Michael Curry (0-1), Stevie Kirwan (0-2), Seanie Lacey (2-3), Gavin Nugent (0-7). Subs: Jason Curry for Liam Walsh (Mothel), Johnny Kavanagh for Johnny Quinlan, Peter Foran for Michael Curry, Conor Hennebry for Stevie Kirwan, Padraig Hunt for Richie Lacey. The Eastern semi-final is due to be played on the weekend of the 11th March, & all the lads will realise that a more complete performance will be needed to advance to the final.

Minor Football

Last Friday nights championship opener away to Dungarvan was called off due to a number of the Dungarvan players involved in Munster Schools hurling finals. Our next match is at home to Ballinacourty on 4th March.

Defibrillator Course

The final night of the defibrillator course will go ahead at the community centre from 8 to 10 P.M. on Monday 27th February. Anyone who has put their name forward & has not yet attended a course should contact Tina O Brien, 0868570600, to book a place.

Social Tickets

Tickets for our joint social with Clonea which goes ahead on Saturday 10th March, are selling fast so we would urge anyone who is interested in going to contact either Ciaran Fogarty, 086-1627544, or Noel Kirwan, 087-2271759, to purchase tickets & avoid disappointment.

Nursery Program

We had a good turn out of young footballers from U5 to U8 when they started back at indoor football in the community centre last week. This will continue until the end of March, with junior & senior infants on Wednesday nights from 7:30 to 8:30 PM, & U8’s on Monday nights from 7:15 to 8:15 P.M. If your child didn’t come along on the first week, they can come along any night & there is no charge. Yearly membership of €10 will be collected on the first night attending. Any parents who have any queries can contact the clubs coaching officer, Declan Hahessy, 087-2264550.
