Senior Football

Our senior footballers season came to an end last Sunday 1st September, when we lost out in our final group championship match against The Nire in a match that was switched from Leamybrien to Stradbally. With other results in the group going against us with Ballinameela securing a draw against Ring, they secure the final quarter final spot. Thankfully we avoided the dreaded relegation play-off as Ballinacourty heavily beat Brickey Rangers, therefore they finished bottom of the group on scoring difference.

We scored the first point of this match when Ronan Crotty playing at midfield finished a good move with a neat point. Unfortunately we didn’t score for the remainder of the half as our play was very static & we failed to open up The Nire defence to any great extent. The game was level at 0-1 apiece until the 12th minute when The Nire got there 2nd point from a free, but with their forwards having a bad day in front of the posts with 8 first half wides (16 in total), they never got too far ahead of us despite dominating possession & creating numerous scoring opportunities. They did lead 0-1 to 0-6 at the break but with the slight breeze & hill with us in the 2nd half it gave us some hope. We started the 2nd half much brighter & had the first 2 points from a John Kirwan (Cool) free & Michael Curry from play. It was tit for tat for the next 10 minutes with both sides adding a few points each, although we were struggling to gain possession in midfield. With 5 minutes to go, a mis-kicked attempt for a point from Gavin Nugent dropped into the square & as Paul Power & the full back tussled for possession the ball deflected off Paul’s legs & ended up in the back of the net. We were now only 2 points down & in with a chance of causing a shock, but The Nire went up the field in the next attack & knocked over a point & when they added another point 3 minutes later in the 58th minute there was no way back for us, with the final score at full time, Rathgormack 1-5, The Nire 0-12.

Team: Brendan Crotty, Conor Walsh, Mickey Crotty, John Kirwan (Bally), Ciaran Fogarty, Tony Power, Cathal Crowch, Michael Curry (0-2), Ronan Crotty (0-2), John Kirwan (Cool)(0-1), Paudie Larkin, Jason Curry, Steven Kirwan, Paul Power (1-0), Gavin Nugent.  Subs: Daniel Drohan for Steven Kirwan, Jason Gleeson for Jason Curry, Paudie Whelan for Paul Power, Johnny Quinlan for John Kirwan (Bally).

So, a disappointing end to a difficult season for our senior team. However senior status for 2014 is secure & hopefully our young & emerging players can strengthen our squad for next year & will work hard to get the club back into the top four within the county. The club would like to thank team manager Mervyn Cummins, selectors, Michael Cummins, Declan Power & Steven Flynn, & coach Seamus Delahunty for their time & commitment during the year.

Intermediate Football

Our intermediate teams relegation play-off against Gaultier last Monday 26th August in Dunhill never materialised as the opposition could only muster 12 players at throw-in time & therefore we were given a walkover. Therefore our intermediate status is secured for our 2nd team for 2014, but the club will have to review the position in the coming months to see if we should continue in this grade. Disappointingly a lot of our younger players failed to commit to this team in any meaningful way & as a result we found it very difficult to compete, suffering a number of heavy defeats, & indeed struggled to field a team for most of our championship matches. The club would like to thank the team management of Denis Curry & Shane Gough for the effort throughout the year.
