U21 ‘A’ County Champions

We secured the 2013 U21 'A' county title, & our 2nd in 3 years, last Wednesday evening, 27th March, when we had a 6-point victory over Ballinacourty, under lights in Fraher Field. We started this match very well & William Hahessy opened the scoring with a point in the 5th minute. Gavin Nugent added two more points from play in the 8th & 9th minutes, & when the same player finish a good move to the net in the 13th minute, to put us 6 ahead, we were well in control throughout the field. However we seemed to take the foot off the peddle after this & for the next 10 minutes Ballinacourty enjoyed the lions share of the possession, although they only added 1 point following good play from all our backs, & some poor shooting & passing from the opposition. Gavin Nugent scored a pointed free on 26 minutes to steady things somewhat & Liam Walsh (Bally) knocked over the final score of the half with a point in the 29th minute, to leave us deservedly 7 points up at the break, 1-5 to 0-1. Gavin Nugent added another point from play in the first minute of the 2nd half, but we didn’t score for nearly 25 minutes after this & Ballinacourty added four point, 2 from play & 2 frees, to leave only four points in it with 10 minutes left. We had several clear goal chances to finish the match off in the last 10 minutes but failed to make the most of them, & Ballinacourty continued to push on in search of a goal to give them an unlikely victory. Conor Hennebry kicked a beauty of a point with 5 minutes left, & the last point of the game fell to young William Hahessy in the 62nd minute to top of a man of the match performance from him, & give us a fully deserved victory on a score-line of Rathgormack 1-8, Ballinacourty 0-5.

Team: Eamonn Cahill, Padraig Hunt, Billy Power, Liam Walsh (Mothel), Brendan Behan, Dean Kirwan, David Connolly, Conor Walsh, Michael Curry, Conor Hennebry (0-1), Liam Walsh (Bally) (0-1), William Hahessy (0-2), Jason Gleeson, Gavin Nugent (1-4), Jason Curry. Subs:  Tony Curry for Jason Curry.

In truth, Ballinacourty never got off the mark on the night & although our boys probably didn’t play as well as they can, they were definitely the better team, with all six defenders & goalkeeper playing solidly throughout & only conceding 3 points from play, & our forwards & midfielders having an exceptional first 15 minutes, & working tirelessly for the remainder of the game. Captain Eamonn Cahill accepted the cup from the county chairman afterwards & all in the club would like to echo Eamonn’s words & say thanks & well done to team manager Kenny Hassett & his selectors Brendan Curry & Tom Hassett. A special congratulations to all the players on the squad. County finals are not easily won, & hopefully it will be a sign of things to come in the months & years ahead.

U14 Football

The match against Gaultier that was postponed the previous week went ahead on Wednesday evening, 27th March, at 5:30 PM in Gracedieu & also doubled up as our Feile fixture with the same club. Unfortunately we lost out on a score line of Rathgormack 0-6, Gaultier 3-3. They play their next match away to De La Salle on Saturday 6th April, with a 4:30 PM throw in.

Intermediate Football

We had a good win against Kill in the league last Saturday in Rathgormack, in a match that was switched from Sunday. Trailing by 2 points at the break, we got the better of the opposition early in the second half playing with the aid of a stiff breeze, & when Paudie Whelan finished a good move to the net, it put us ahead & in control. We finished out winners on a score-line of Rathgormack 1-13, Kill 1-10. We play away to Kilmac next weekend in the league & start our championship campaign the following weekend against Dunhill.

Senior Football

Our seniors had a 5 point win over Brickey Rangers, 0-8 to 0-3, at home in the league last Sunday in a match that was switched from Easter Monday. We play at home to Kilrosanty in the league next Saturday, 6th April; with a 7:00 PM throw in. This is our final preparation before our first championship match of the year against Ballinameela the following weekend.
