Senior Football Championship

We have been informed that the likely date for our 2nd championship match against Stradbally will be the weekend of the 13th/14th August, provided Waterford senior hurlers don’t reach the All-Ireland final, with our 3rd match to be played on the weekend of the 3rd September. This now gives us something to work towards in training & in organising challenge matches, as all our other competitive matches have been completed.

U16 Football

Our U16 team kick off their championship this week with their first match being played away to An Gaelthacht on Monday 18th July, & their 2nd match being played at home to Naomh Brid next Monday 25th July at 7:00 pm.

U 7/8 Football Blitzes

Approx 20 of our young footballers will have the chance to show the benefits of all their training when they take part in 2 blitzes in the next week, at home to St. Mollerans on Monday 18th July, & away to Portlaw on Monday 25th July. These non-competitive small-sided games are a great way to introduce our young players to game situations, without any pressure on winning & with all players having full participation.

Waterford Footballers

No joy for the county footballers in Limerick last Saturday night. A penalty decision & a sending –off went against them on the night, with both decisions having a crucial bearing on the outcome. In truth, Waterford failed to make the most of the strong wind in the first half, & finding themselves 2 points down at half time heading into the wind in the 2nd half, made the task all the more difficult. However they managed to bring it back level, & the game was still in the balance before the sending off with 10 minutes to go. A score of 0-9 was never going to be enough to win a championship match even taking the weather conditions into account, & the absence of several regulars through injury etc., made the task all the more difficult, not to mention the non availability of the footballing hurlers, whose presence could turn this team into a major force. Hopefully the management & squad involved will stay together for next season & build on the progress that has been made in the last few years.
