Senior Football

We lost out agonisingly by a single point in our 2nd championship match against Stradbally last Saturday 13th August in Fraher Field. In a strong performance from our lads, we started well despite going a point down in the first minute, but it was 2 points each after 10 minutes. We were winning a lot of possession around midfield but not turning this into scores, & Stradbally edged ahead by 4 points to 2 after 17 minutes. Micky Crotty scored a great point in the 20th minute & then we hit a good patch which saw us score 1-2 in 3 minutes to put us 4 points ahead, with the goal coming from Martin Whelan. Stradbally tacked on 2 points in injury time to leave the score 1-5 to 0-6 at half time, & it was all to play for in the second half. We probably should have been further ahead with the amount of possession we had. The first 10 minutes of the 2nd half saw both teams add 2 points each before Stradbally added 2 more by the 45th minute to draw level. Then a minute later a good move saw Gavin Nugent bear down on goal & when his shot was saved by the keeper, it rebounded to Paudie Whelan who finished to the net following a deflection of a Stradbally defender. A few minutes later Ronan Crotty kicked over a point & we were 4 points up with 10 minutes left to play & looked like we were in a winning position. However, Stradbally have been in this position before & from then on they picked up all the possession & with their midfielders & half forwards running at us relentlessly they added points in the 53rd , 57th, & 58th minute, with 2 of the points potential goals, to leave us only 1 point up. A lot of our lads were out on their feet at this stage & we couldn’t seem to work a score to take the pressure off despite creating a few chances. Also we had our fullback Jamie Kirwan sent off for questioning a referees decision. As the game entered injury time Stradbally kicked a long range point for the equaliser & 2 minutes into injury time they stole the match with a point from their wing forward who had come on as a sub. We did manage to work the ball up & win a free just inside the 45 close to the line. But Ronan Cahill’s effort from the hand from a difficult position drifted wide & with 5 minutes injury time played the ref blew the final whistle, with a final score of Rathgormack 2-8, Stradbally 0-15.

Team: Brendan Crotty, Gerard Kirwan, Jamie Kirwan, Kieran Fogarty, Mikey Crotty (0-1), Paul Shankey, Nigel Skehan, Ronan Cahill, Richie Power, Martin Whelan (1-0), Paul Power (0-1), Edmund Hogan (0-3(3 fr)), Gavin Nugent (0-1), Paudie Whelan (1-0), Ronan Crotty (0-2 (1 fr)).

Subs: Jack Nugent for Nigel Skehan, Michael Curry for Edmund Hogan.

This was a match we should have got something out of but Stradbally’s 10 years of experience coming through tight battles & greater stamina in the last 10 minutes stood to them well. We can still qualify for the knockout stages if we beat Kilrosanty in our last match which will probably be played in the first or second weekend in September.

VHI Cul Camp

We had 100 boys & girls at our football summer camp last week & they had a great week of activities & fun, & were very luck with the weather, with very little interruption. De La Salle & Waterford’s Kevin Moran visited the camp on Friday to meet all the kids & answer questions. The club would like to thank our coordinator Tony Bolger for his work during the week & leading up to the camp & Josephine Curry for organising the goodie bags for Friday, & anyone else who helped out. The coaches were excellent & ensured that all the children enjoyed themselves, which is the main thing.

Sponsored Head Shave

The club are running a sponsored head shave & waxing night in Ned Kennedy’s pub on Saturday 3rd September with music & great craic ensured, in order to raise funds for a defibrillator for the club dressing rooms. Sponsorship cards have been issued & we would plead with as many people as possible to support this worthwhile venture, which is important for all players, juvenile & adult, as well as parents & supporters who follow our teams. When an emergency occurs, a defibrillator can be the difference between life & death, & none of us know when we might need to use it. The club would like to thank Caitriona Quinlan for organising this fundraiser & she has a number of senior players lined up to take part. Anyone who is interested in helping out can contact her or any committee member.

Club Mugs

The club are currently selling mugs with the club crest as a fundraiser. The cost is €5 per mug with €2 for every mug going to the club. Anyone who is interested in ordering some mugs can contact Vinny Murray.

U21 County Final Photos

Anyone who wishes to order team or other photos from our successful county final U 21 team victory from earlier in the summer can contact Josephine Curry or Vinny Murray to place an order.
