Phelan Cup

We played The Nire away last Wednesday 8th June in the Phelan Cup quarterfinal where both teams fielded under strength.  We started very poorly & were 4 points to 1 down after 8 minutes before we steadied the ship a bit & started to compete. An opportunist goal by Ronan Crotty following a blunder by The Nire keeper in the 19th minute put us a point in front. A point for us from a John Kirwan (Cool) free & 2 from The Nire before the break left the score 1-4 to 0-7 at half time. A second goal by Ronan Crotty in the first minute of the second half following a high ball into the square which was dropped by their keeper, put us in the lead & we added 2 more points in the next few minutes to put us in control. Despite missing a couple of gilt edge goal chances between then & the end of the match, we held out for a deserved 1 point win, with some great defending by our backs in the last 10 minutes. Final score: Rathgormack 2-6, The Nire 0-11. Wing forward John Kirwan (Cool) suffered a bad leg injury towards the end of the match, which looks like putting him out of action for some time. All in the club wish him a speedy recovery.

Team: Brendan Crotty, Gerard Kirwan, Ronan Cahill, Mikey Crotty, Martin Whelan, Paul Shankey, Michael Sexton, Richie Power, Kevin Power (0-2), Liam Walsh, Paul Power, John Kirwan (Cool)(0-1), Darragh Kelly (0-1), Paudie Whelan, Ronan Crotty (2-2).

Subs: Anthony Power for John Kirwan (Cool), Padraig Hunt for Brendan Crotty.

Senior Football League

We had a comfortable win away to a second string Brickey Rangers team last Saturday 11th June in the league.  Despite a lot of scoring chance going astray in the first half, we were well in control & led by 7 points entering first half injury time, but we conceded 1-1 before the half time whistle to give us a slender lead of 1-6 to 1-3. We started the second half very well & added a few points in the first 5 minutes & when Ronan Crotty scored our second goal on 42 minutes the game was over as a contest & Brickey Rangers threw in the towel allowing us to kick points at will before the final whistle. Final score, Rathgormack 5-16, Brickey Rangers 2-4.

Team: Brendan Crotty, Gerard Kirwan, Ronan Cahill (1-0), Kieran Fogarty, Mikey Crotty (0-1), Paul Shankey, Michael Sexton, Paul Power (0-2), Kevin Power (0-1), Gavin Nugent (0-1), Liam Walsh, Paul Drohan (0-2), Darragh Kelly (0-1), Paudie Whelan (1-3), Ronan Crotty (3-1).

Subs: Richie Power (0-3) for Liam Walsh, Anthony Power (0-1) for Michael Sexton, Brian Fogarty for Gavin Nugent, Padraig Hunt for Brendan Crotty.

Junior Football

Our juniors made it 2 wins from 3 championship matches away to St. Saviours last Friday night. Short a number of regulars, we went into this match, knowing that a big improvement was needed from the Gaultier game. We started very tentatively & despite having the majority of possession, we kicked a lot of early wides, which meant after 20 minutes it was all square, 0-2 each. We found our range a bit better before then & half time & added 4 more points to leave the half time score, Rathgormack 0-6, St. Saviours 0-3. For the first 15 minutes of the second half the game followed the same pattern, with only one point each added, but between the 45th & 52nd minutes we added 5 points without reply to secure victory, with our goalie Donal Larkin even getting in on the act slotting over a 45. In a good workman like performance where everyone put in a good effort we won out on a score-line of 0-12 to 0-5.

Team: Donal Larkin (0-1), John Crotty, John Kirwan (Bally), Kieran Fogarty, Sean Cullen, Anthony Power, Muiris Quinlan, Johnny Quinlan (0-2), Brian Fogarty, Richie Lacey (0-1), Steven Power (0-2), Sean Lacey, Stevie Kirwan (0-2), Paddy Crotty (0-1), Kenny Hassett (0-3).

Subs: Pat Terry for Steven Power, Ryan Roche for Brian Fogarty, Padraig Hunt for Stevie Kirwan.
