Senior Football

We had a disappointing performance & result in our senior championship match against Ardmore in the championship last Friday in Fraher Field, when we went down to a 5 point defeat. In a match that lacked any real championship intensity from either side, we played against the wind in the first half, but opened the scoring in the first minute with a point from Ronan Crotty. However, after 3 minutes, we conceded quite a soft goal, which gave Ardmore a lead they would hold on to until the finish. We had a lot of possession for the middle section of the first half but only added two points from Edmund Hogan, one from a free & one from play, to bring us back level by the 15th minute. But we did not score for the rest of the half & Ardmore added 4 points between the 21st & 33rd minute to give them a 4-point lead at the break, 1-4 to 0-3. The strong wind that we had at our backs for the second half didn’t appear to help us & Ardmore added further points before Michael Curry & Conor Walsh kicked points for us in the 39th & 47th minute to keep us in touch. Another Michael Curry point from play in the 55th minute was to be our only other score before the end, despite 5 additional minutes of injury time. Final score was Rathgormack 0-6, Ardmore 1-8.

Team: Brendan Crotty, Conor Walsh, Tony Power, Mark Mears, Michael Crotty, Paudie Larkin, Nigel Skehan, Ronan Cahill, Cathal Crowch, Paul Drohan, Franny Halpin, John Kirwan (Cool), Ronan Crotty, Edmund Hogan, Michael Curry. Subs: Ger Kirwan for Paul Drohan, John Kirwan (Bally) for Franny Halpin, Donal Larkin for John Kirwan (Cool), Michael Sexton for Edmund Hogan.

Despite this defeat, we have qualified for the quarter finals due to other results last weekend. We complete the league section of the championship when we play The Nire next Saturday 18th August, with a 7:00 PM throw in Leamybrien. Hopefully an improved performance will set us up for the quarter finals which are due to be play on the weekend of the 23rd September.
